CBD and How to Eat it : CBD 101

If you’ve been tracking my other pieces on CBD, you now know the differences between CBD and THC. We know that CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has a ton of positive health effects and we know that it’s legal (to differing degrees) in all 50 states. So, how does one gain these beneficial effects? And in this case, how does one eat CBD?

CBD and hemp added to an açaí bowl is the right way to start your day.

CBD is derived from the flower of the hemp plant and is then commonly refined down to an oil or isolate. These derivatives can then be mixed in with juice, a smoothie, an açaí bowl, formulated into the base compound for a face mask, or soap, or any other number of edible or applicable products. When shopping for CBD products, it’s important to make sure you aren’t buying a hemp oil product. Hemp oil comes from the hemp seed, whereas CBD, as we learned earlier, comes from the hemp flower. While hemp oil (or hemp-seed oil) can be a delicious nutty oil for cooking and adding protein to food, great in lotion and soap products, or even a wood varnish, it contains trace, or no CBD. Same thing for hemp seeds.

CBD, when harvested from the flowers of hemp plants, offers more medical benefits like anti-inflammation, pain, seizures and much much more. Most hemp CBD products are manufactured in Colorado, Kentucky, and New York as the laws there are most favorable at this time for the market!

But, I’m here to talk about CBD and how to consume CBD.

Adding CBD or cannabis leaf juice to your usual fresh pressed juice is delicious!

CBD can be consumed in many many ways — I mentioned smoothies and açaí bowls, but those looking to benefit from the medical effects of CBD have been known to use it in coffee, candies, and mints. My personal opinion is that CBD is best added and consumed in fresh squeezed juice. Dosing, as with any other therapeutic, will vary by person but industry standards suggest 10mg per serving is a safe and effective dose. I’ve found the best and lasting effectiveness in regularly consuming 10–20mg a day and that the effects really start to show after about 30 days of dosing.

There are a myriad of wonderful resources that dive into the effectiveness and dosing further than I will today. Please utilize them and find out what is best for you!
